The closest parallel is Macbeth, and even Macbeth is less about the witches than how Macbeth's own choices subsequently doom him, while the witches are merely the motor to get his downfall started. The closest thing to the Marlovian overreacher in the Shakespeare canon is probably Richard III, but Richard has a kind of wicked sense of humor that makes his murderous path seem like less of a numbing catalogue of horrors in the way that Tamburlaine can seem sometimes.ĭoctor Faustus is a good play, though it's difficult to compare it to the Shakespeare tragedies because it's suffused far more than any of Shakespeare's plays with a supernatural sense of doom. Faustus, Tamburlaine, and Barabas from The Jew of Malta, are all representative examples. Marlowe was fascinated by the character of the overreacher, who basically lived life without a reverse gear. They're certainly not as nuanced, but that's a different artistic choice.
